SAFETY GLASSES AND SAFETY GOGGLES

The problem with safety glasses and goggles are the workers not keen in wearing it during

work. Most recent statistics have revealed that in the overwhelming majority of cases where an injury to the eye has been sustained at work, safety glasses or safety goggles were available,

but for one reason or another the worker failed to use them. as we know the problem will direct hit the workers because of their unsafe act in not wearing the equipment that have been provided by the employer.

But as a safety officer we cant simply point fingers to the workers. We tend to understand and try to solve the problem with the workers. As a safety officer we have to train and give awareness programmes to teach workers about safety not only during work but also after works safety. And telling them about the injuries that could happen, for not wearing safety glasses or safety goggles. And how sensitive their eyes are.

Workers that is always having this issue is welders and cutters as we know they are exposed to high intensity glare and flying particles that is produced by the equipment. Safety glasses and goggles are their secondary protective equipment

Besides, welders mask. Other major problems is not with the workers but from the safety glasses or safety goggles itself

One of the main problems reported was fogging. Fogging is the build up of condensation either on the inside of the safety goggles or on the outside.

This fogging can be gradual, building up throughout the day, or in many cases the fogging may build very rapidly, within a couple of seconds.

This is often caused by workers moving from contrasting areas where temperature or humidity levels may vary widely. Many businesses have hotter, colder or more humid areas, and when working or moving outdoors the temperature may be significantly different. For people who wear normal spectacles this has often been a problem when walking into shops or even the home from outside, where glasses instantly steam up.

Those who wear contact lenses quote this as being the prime reason for switching, but clearly contact lenses do not offer any protection within the workplace.

However, there are modern safety glasses and safety goggles which have been specially treated to resist fogging, thereby removing the problem and the inconvenience. The second major factor in the removal of safety goggles was peripheral loss of vision, caused by bulky or inconveniently placed frames, and in many cases the bulkiness or the rigid frames were also cause for discomfort.

However, this really doesn't have to be the case, and there is no reason why safety has to equal discomfort. Modern safety glasses and safety goggles offer much improved levels of comfort, as well as safety, and with anti fogging treatments as standard, there are fewer reasons for non compliance than even just a few years ago.

The conclusion is as safety officer he must play an important role in selecting and giving awareness programme to reduce hazard and accident from happening. Safety should not

be carried alone by the safety officer but everyone at the company. SAFETY FIRST!
