The collision between a train and a tanker that loaded with 27000 liters of petrol near the Taman Friendship in Kepayan opposite the Kota Kinabalu airport. It was said that the tanker was entering the station when it was hit by the train at the illegal unmanned crossing. There are a lot of involvements in order to investigate the main cause or factor that distribute toward the accident such as a committee establishment consist of TRANSPORT MINISTRY, PUBLIC WORK DEPARTMENT and SABAH RAILWAY DEPARTMENT and not forgot to the POLICE for their effort in investigating the accident. The investigation are based under section 337 of Penal Code which is whoever causes hurt to any person by doing any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or personal safety of others will be liable to imprisonment of up to six months or fined up to RM1,000. The train company have to bear a great losses as much as RM16 million for the damaged coaches cause by the crash and inferno. Fortunately there are just 12 passenger hurt cause by the accident and no fatalities out of 200 passengers in the train.
Factor that contribute toward the accident
There are 70 illegal crossing along 134km railway from the Tanjung Aru to the Tenom district and that is truly a wonder because that illegal crossing shouldn’t be there anymore after being upgrade at total cost of RM 334 million. Unmanned cross gate are also the factor that contribute to the accident because the crossing people doesn’t aware of the train and base on locals resident, they said there will be a man at the gate after upgrading the railway. Some area along the railway are not being fence properly and some of the fence are demolish or vandalized by the locals and this shows no self-awareness when vandalized the fence can cause trouble to others.
Preventive measure
The authorities should implement the crossing gate to control the traffic flow of vehicle crossing the railway. The train company should increase the safety campaign among the resident live near the railway. Maintenance or check the fence along the railway to prevent any unwanted occurrence.
