LOTO is stand for Lockout Tagout which is refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from the unexpected start-up of energy from machinery and equipment or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities.

Lockout Tagout system are divided by lockout and

tagout device. Lockout device work as a lock to hold an energy-isolating device in the safe position and prevent the energizing of a machine or equipment, while Tagout device act as a warning device, such as a tag, which can be securely fastened to an energy-isolating device to indicate that the equipment being controlled may not be operated until the tagout device is removed.

According to the research conducted by United Auto Workers(UAW) of United State, 20% of the fatalities that occurred during servicing and maintenance of the machine in 20^thcentury were contributed by inadequate hazardous energy control procedures specifically, lockout tagout system.

There was one example of accident cases due to insufficient control of energy from machinery. “The 23 year old technician had to changing the electrical motor of pulley machine. While the technician was standing on the pulley, the machine is suddenly rotate. Probably he fell or the pulley pulled his leg. His leg was broken and he suffered bad injuries.” Refer to this cases the workers (technician) should cut of the main supply of energy by implementing lockout tagout system before performing his task.

As a conclusion lockout tagout system is the effective method which can be practice to control the hazard due to energy sources from machinery.
